Graves (Castle) Mansion
Built in 1868 by Robert Graves, a Comstock visionary and founder, the house symbolized the position he held as Empire Mine’s superintendent. With a love of French chateau architecture, he designed and laid the foundations of replica building in Normandy. Starting in 1863 and ending in 1868, the construction of the home was the object of fascination, especially as it showed what mining wealth and dreams fulfilled could achieve for the average man. The home is located on B Street, known as ‘Millionaires Row’ due to the number of mansions lining the street at the time. With a mansard roof and dormers, the mansion embodies Second Empire architecture.
