The camels, ostriches, zebras and good old-fashioned family fun returns with the 64th International Camel & Ostrich Races, Sept. 8-10, right here in historic Virginia City. This hilarious and family-favorite tradition started as a prank between two newspaper editors more than 60 years ago and remains as silly and fun as its origin.
The International Camel & Ostrich Races bring the laughs for the whole family as jockeys, both professional and amateur, race their camels, ostriches and zebras around the horseshoe track to the roars of the crowd. You never know what might happen! It’s a comical racing spectacle guaranteed to leave the entire family laughing. You can even catch a ride on a camel – a photo op not to be missed.
With four shows to choose from, there’s no reason to miss this uproarious event. Friday night, Sept. 8, enjoy Hot Camel Nights, an evening show with discounted rates for locals. Saturday, Sept. 9 catch the 10 a.m. or the 2 p.m. show and the up-close and personal Camel Hump to C Street. Then Sunday, Sept. 10 is Family Day with a show at noon and the first 100 kids ride a camel for free. Gates open an hour in advance of each show start.

Wipe your calendars for the first weekend in October for the 32nd World Championship Outhouse Races, Oct. 7-8 right here on C Street in Virginia City. This free event dates back to when outdoor plumbing was outlawed and our angry residents took to the streets with their outhouses in protest – and the tradition was born. Way to go!
This hilarious event pits teams of costumed outhouse racers against each other in an all-out potty race as they push their homemade outhouses down C Street toward the toilet paper finish line all to claim the top latrine title of Grand Champion. The Parade of Outhouses begins each day at noon with races immediately following.
Think you can push pretty hard? Register your team of outhouse racers and push your outhouse in front of a crowd of cheering, laughing spectators. Heck, you could even earn a cash prize for number one!
Not sure how to build a racing outhouse? That’s okay. We have a limited number of racing shacks we can provide on a first-come, first-served basis. Or we can provide plans to build your own throne.
Ready to roll?
- Learn how you can build your own World Championship Outhouse. We’ll provide the specifications and registration information.
