About: The Breaking Ground art installation is a captivating photo-phonic experience that merges documentary photography and sound to reflect on the cyclical nature of industry. Valery LymanÕs work, recorded over four years in North DakotaÕs Bakken oilfields, features over 700 photographs projected onto the industrial structures of the Donovan Mill. Accompanied by audio recordings from workers and ambient sounds, the installation blends the past with the present, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in AmericaÕs industrial legacy. This installation encourages exploration and reflection, offering a unique sensory journey through the voices and landscapes of blue-collar workers that built the nation’s industrial history.
Set against the backdrop of the historic Donovan Mill, the installation not only evokes the memory of those who once worked there but also connects to the broader story of American industry, including NevadaÕs significant role in silver production. Visitors will walk among the projections, experiencing a deep connection between the physical site and the imagery, making history come alive in a powerful, multi-dimensional way.Ê
