Christmas on the Comstock is about tradition.

And you won’t find a better place that brings history and that warm, Christmas vibe together for one magical experience than in Virginia City.

Christmas on the Comstock goes all out in December. This Victorian-style holiday celebration features an official tree lighting, a play offering a new take on the holiday classic “The Comstock Christmas Carol,” a saloon crawl, our Believe Again Shopping Spree, the V&T Candy Cane Express, the Train O’Lights and much more. Prepare for this to be your new favorite holiday tradition.

SIGNATURE EVENTS

Believe Again – A Christmas Shopping Giveaway
Dec. 1 – 18
Making it fun to support local businesses. Do your holiday shopping at Virginia City’s unique and boutique stores this year, stay the night, eat at a restaurant, and be entered to win a $500 gift card. Simply bring your receipts to the Visitors Center and receive a raffle ticket for every $5 spent in town. Two winners will each receive a $500 shopping spree in Virginia City. Shop between Dec. 1 – 18. Winners announced Dec. 19. Visitor Center hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily.

Holiday Decorating Contest
Dec. 2 – 18
Virginia City’s shops don’t just decorate for Christmas, they go full Clark Griswold. With lights bright enough for Santa Claus to see from the North Pole, come see what makes this small-town Christmas so special. And you get to select your favorites. Voting takes place online from Dec. 2 – 18. Look for the voting link starting Dec. 2.

Christmas in the Sierra Concert with David John & The Comstock Cowboys
Dec. 2, 7 PM
Join us to help ring in the Holiday Season and enjoy this Christmas extravaganza.

The Grinch Made Me Do It Saloon Crawl
Dec. 3, 11 AM – 5 PM
Have some fun during the Grinch Made Me Do It Saloon Crawl with festival specialty holiday drinks at featured locations. The saloon crawl starts at 11 a.m., with check-in starting at 10 a.m. Tickets on sale here.

St. Mary’s Art Center 8th annual Holiday Faire
Dec. 3 from 10 AM – 4 PM and Dec. 4 from 10 AM – 3 PM
St. Mary’s Art Center offers a truly festive holiday shopping experience with over 20 local and regional artists and makers sharing and selling their creations in a decorated, music-filled space. This is the perfect shopping opportunity to give truly one-of-a-kind gifts while also supporting artists and artisans. Free admission. Learn more here.

Parade of Lights
Dec. 3 and Dec. 10, 5 PM
See the spirit of Christmas travel through our historic town as Christmas cheer lights up the streets with our annual Parade of Lights held on two weekends – Saturday, Dec. 3 and Saturday, Dec. 5 at 5 p.m. Everyone is welcome to participate! Bring the entire family and join in the fun. Sip some hot cocoa and enjoy sweet treats from our local shops as you take in the warmth of the Christmas spirit. Line up starts at 4:30 p.m. at Fourth Ward School. No registration is needed – simply light up your vehicle, add some music and join in the festivities! Participants are encouraged to cruise back and forth through the town until fireworks start at 6 p.m. If you are a walking group, you’ll be at the front of the line so vehicles can cruise C Street.

Magical Christmas Fireworks Show
Dec. 3 and 10, 6 PM
Nothing says holiday magic like fireworks during the holidays. It’s just that extra sparkle needed to make your family truly believe in the spirit of Christmas once again. Join us for a special holiday firework show taking place Saturday, Dec. 4 and Saturday, Dec. 11 at 6 p.m. The fireworks take place following the Parade of Lights. Thanks to the Silverland Inn & Suites and Forever Christmas for generously supporting this event.

V&T Candy Cane Express and Train O’Lights
Nov. 25-26, Dec. 2-4, Dec. 9-11 and Dec. 16-18
Add a little magic to the season and bring your family to Virginia City to ride the V&T Candy Cane Express. Steeped in holiday spirit, this whimsical train has become a cherished local tradition for families of all ages. Or choose the Train O’Lights – an evening train that lights up the sky with thousands of LED lights, creating a magical Christmas memory that will last forever. Trains depart from the Virginia City depot and the narrated, round-trip ride lasts about 40 minutes. Reserve your seats in advance here.

Tidings, Tinsel and St. Nick at Piper’s Opera House
Dec. 3, 1-4 p.m., $10 per child
A fun-filled afternoon for the kids at Piper’s Opera House! Bring the little ones to enjoy decorating Christmas tree cookies, writing letters to Santa, ornament decoration, and other fun Christmas crafts.

A Comstock Christmas Carol by Piper’s Players
Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Dec. 11 at 2 p.m.
This family-friendly play features the story of the Christmas Carol told with a Comstock twist. It’s a classic Christmas tale for the whole family. Tickets go on sale in October 2022.
