Introducing the Virginia City Tourism Commission’s Legacy Society
Virginia City runs on grit, history, and the generous spirit of those who show up. From parades and haunted tours to daily operations at the Visitor Center and Piper’s Opera
House volunteers are the heartbeat behind the scenes. They keep this town moving, keep our events thriving, and help us offer the kind of experience that brings people back again and again.
Over the years, I’ve seen just how much of an impact volunteers can have, including those who were part of our original volunteer group, the Living Legends. Their commitment
helped shape what volunteerism means in Virginia City, and I’m deeply grateful for everything they contributed.
As I look ahead, I know that we need to evolve our approach to meet the growing demands of our town and tourism programs. That’s why I’m proud to introduce a new initiative: the Virginia City Tourism Commission’s Legacy Society.
The Legacy Society is more than just a group of volunteers. It’s a community of individuals who care deeply about Virginia City, its story, its visitors, and its future. These are the
people who greet our guests, support our events, help preserve our heritage, and show up when it counts.
Alongside the launch of the Legacy Society, I’ve also implemented a new, board approved, volunteer policy. This policy outlines roles and responsibilities more clearly than ever
before, streamlines how hours and contributions are tracked, and ensures that volunteers feel supported and recognized for their work. My goal is to build a program that is sustainable, professional, and rooted in respect, for the volunteers and the town they serve.
So, if you’ve ever wanted to be more involved, now’s the time. Whether you have a few hours a month or want to commit more regularly, there’s a place for you in the Legacy Society. From event-day support to ongoing roles at key tourism sites, I welcome a wide range of interests and availability.
Applications are now open. If you love Virginia City and want to help shape its future, I’d love to hear from you. To get started, just reach out to me directly at lkruse@storeycounty.org.
Volunteering here isn’t just about giving your time; it’s about becoming part of something lasting. That’s what legacy means.
